A city reinventing itself
↳ Overview
A city reinventing itself — Revolution Mill, the former flagship property of Cone Mills in Greensboro, NC, was undergoing a sweeping $100 million transformation into a mixed-use community designed for people to live, work, and play. With construction still active and no finished environments available to photograph, Common Giant Creative — the advertising agency leading the project's marketing and produce three distinct architectural visualizations ahead of the public launch. The three deliverables — an Apartment View, an Office View, and an Outdoor View — needed to communicate the full scope and atmosphere of the development to a public audience who had never seen the interior of the historic mill reimagined for modern life. Each render demanded its own spatial identity, lighting mood, and human scale.
↳ Challenge
Rendering spaces that didn't exist yet — The project demanded something inherently difficult: creating photorealistic imagery of environments that were still under construction, using accuracy, atmosphere, and emotional resonance in equal measure. With the renovation actively underway, no finished spaces were available to reference, and no materials or surfaces could simply be photographed in place. The agency was tasked with producing three fully realized, large-format renders — each with a distinct spatial character — while remaining faithful to both the original Mill's historic architecture and the developer's forward-looking vision for the space. Compounding the creative challenge was an uncompromising production timeline, requiring a coordinated multi-artist workflow from day one.
↳ Solution
Research, presence, and a human touch — We took a research-first approach, conducting on-site visits during the active construction phase to gather reference photography of the Mill's architecture, textures, and surrounding landscape. 3D Supervisor Jona Daluz personally photographed the site to ensure every material surface and spatial quality was accurately captured and could be faithfully recreated in the 3D environment. She assembled and led a three-person team of 3D artists through a tightly structured production pipeline, maintaining direct client communication and regular progress updates throughout each stage. In a distinctive personal touch, she also photographed the client's own staff on location — incorporating them directly into the renderings to give each scene a grounded, inhabited quality that pure CGI environments often lack. The project concluded with a full print compositing pass, preparing all three images for large-format output and press distribution in a single, unified workflow.

The Revolution Mill renderings were met with strong client praise and successfully deployed at the development's launch event. All three visualizations were distributed across press releases tied to the project — helping shape public perception of Greensboro's newest community before a single renovation was complete.

The project stands as an early demonstration to transform architectural ambition into compelling, photorealistic imagery. More than technically successful, it showed what becomes possible when a studio brings creative direction, production discipline, and a genuine investment in the story being told.
